While dealing with their poverty the girls must also overcome their short comings, Meg’s vanity, Josephine is hot tempered, Beth’s shyness and Amy’s selfishness, as they mature into womanhood. Early on a charitable act of giving their breakfast to another poor family sets into motion a series of events. Their charity is rewarded by their rich neighbor Mr Laurence (Henry Stephenson). In turn they are invited to a New Years Eve Party where Laurie (Douglass Montgomery) is interested in Josephine, and Amy becomes jealous. Meanwhile Laurie tutor John Brooke (John Lodge) is falling in love with Meg. All four are having growing pains, they betray each other, they argue among themselves and with their respected partners however, when family tragedy strikes they are of one mind.
