In “Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte,” an aging Southern woman (Bette Davis) is like Lizzie Borden, thought to be an axe murderess who got away with it because of her rich father’s influence. Living in a decaying mansion for decades with her maid (Agnes Moorehead), she is now facing eviction but won’t leave her home and site of the infamous murder. Authorities send for her cousin Miriam (Olivia DeHavilland) and her friend Dr. Drew Bayliss (Joseph Cotton) when Charlotte seems to be sinking into dementia. But the arrival of help only makes it worse as she seems to hallucinate all the time, seeing dead bodies and axe murders recreated in her house. Dr. Bayliss keeps administering drugs, but it seems only to make matters worse. Is Charlotte really losing her mind? Or is she the victim of an elaborate ruse to drive her mad and gain control of her estate? Also, if she did really chop off her boyfriend’s head with an axe years earlier, should they be messing with her mind?
