Thomas "Babe" Levy (Dustin Hoffman) is a graduate student in New York City. Visiting him from time to time is his brother Henry (Roy Scheider) who works for a mysterious government entity called "The Division". Henry is working on the case of a man who recently died while in possession of a key to a safe-deposit box full of stolen World War II diamonds. Henry believes that the man's brother Dr. Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier), a former Nazi officer and concentration camp dentist at Auschwitz, will be coming to America to collect them. When Henry turns up dead, it falls to Thomas to figure out who has the diamonds. Abducted and tortured by Szell, Thomas escapes only to realize it was Szell who murdered his brother. Thomas must now find Szell and the diamonds and avenge himself and his dead brother.
