A father, Eddie Hopper (Alan Alda), wants to throw a big, extravagant wedding for his daughter Betsy (Molly Ringwald). Betsy just wants something small and intimate and might wish to elope instead. Besides this conflict, there are other funny disagreements going on, like how the father plans to pay for the big wedding he desires. Eddie has to borrow money from Oscar Henner (Joe Pesci), who is involved with organized criminals. Oscar is also cheating on his wife (Catherine O’Hara), and she knows it. Also, Betsy’s sister (Ally Sheedy) is also a cop, and another mob member, Stevie Dee (Anthony LaPaglia), finds himself attracted to her; the feeling is mutual. The wedding party ends up with a tent that leaks when it rains.
