J.C. Wiatt (Diane Keaton) is a go-getting, ambitious New York executive who inherits her long lost cousin’s child after the cousin and his wife pass away. J. C. tries to balance it all and be a Super-mom even though her new “acquisition” strains her relationship with her equally ambitious boyfriend, Steven (Harold Ramis), and lets her evil protégé, Ken (James Spader), climb over her on the corporate ladder. She starts over by moving to rural Vermont, where she purchases a money pit sight-unseen, has a awkward romance with the local veterinarian, Dr. Cooper (Sam Shepard) and builds a company from scratch, using her business acumen. Which path will J.C. choose: The high-powered New York businesswoman or the entrepreneurial rural Vermont business owner?
