Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur) and Tony Kirby (James Stewart) are passionately in love. They come from totally opposite families. The Kirby’s are wealthy who think everything revolves around money. But the Sycamore’s are rather odd. Money means little and they enjoy the eccentric lifestyle they enjoy. When Tony proposes to Alice, the Kirby’s are mortified. They desire much more for their son. However, they agree with the stipulation that the two families meet over dinner. The evening is a typical dinner for the Sycamores but the Kirby’s are mortified. When Mr. Kirby, (Edward Arnold) reveals that he needs to buy the Sycamore home so he is able to complete the land necessary for a building project, Grandpa Martin (Lionel Barrymore) erupts in rage. This causes the break-up between Alice and Tony. But will the lovebirds be able to overcome their families differences to find true love once and for all?
