In a devilish triangle of New England states in New Hampshire, Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston) often takes up residence. In the 1840s he meets Jabez Stone (James Craig), a young farmer and son of Ma Stone (Jane Darwell), and offers him great success for the cost of his inconsequential soul. It’s a bad deal, and when payment comes due, Stone requests a hearing to plead his case. Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold), noted senator and orator, takes the case and shows American ingenuity when the satanic Mr. Scratch calls upon a jury of Hell’s most infamous Americans, including Salem witch Justice John Hathorne (H. B. Warner) to preside on the case. Webster will not be outdone by the Devil.
