Dave (Clint Eastwood) is a disc jockey in the quiet community of Carmel, California. One lonely night, he meets Evelyn (Jessica Walter) in a bar and goes back to her place. There she professes her love for him and confesses that she is a fan of his radio show. She hoped he would pick her up. She is the one who repeatedly calls into the show and asks Dave to play her favorite song "Misty". Dave gets the clue that she is too possessive of him and brushes her off. He gets on with his life, meeting and starting a good relationship with Tobie (Donna Mills). Evelyn becomes jealous of Tobie and not only threatens Dave and his career as a disc jockey, but his new girlfriend, too.
